Pismo was at one time famous for its clams. Although, you will see a sign made of a sculpted clam when you enter or leave the city, clams digging is illegal here now unless you purchase a license. Even with a license you are only allowed a certain number each day if you find them.

There are many festivals in Pismo Beach throughout the year, such as the Clam Festival and the Jazz Festival, and the very popular Car Show on Father's Day weekend each year.

Pismo Beach was founded in 1891 and incorporated in 1946. The City is part of the original 8,838 acre Rancho Pismo. Rancho Pismo was granted to Jose Ortega by Manuel Rinemo Goriod on November 18, 1840.
